January 11th marks Amelia Earhart Day

Z Club at Corvallis High School
Twenty-one students organized the Z Club at CHS in October 2002. Past service projects have included helping with the Zonta Auction in November, tree decorating at Corvallis Caring Place in December and collecting used cell phones for the Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence (CARDV). Two Ukrainian orphans have also been sponsored through the TOUCH Project.
Z Club at CHS held its first meeting of the 2010/2011 school year on Sept 14. Seven members signed up to help with staffing at the Willamette Neighborhood Housing Services Annual Fundraiser, which was held Sept 21. The club met again that day to elect officers and update the Z Club display board for their school’s Activities Open House.

Halloween games, crafts, snacks and door-to-door trick-or-treating at The Regent Retirement Residence was so much fun in 2009, that a return visit was made on Oct 29, 2010 (and that was a no-school day).
The club’s first bake sale of the year was held Oct 28-29 to coincide with parent-teacher conferences.
The club’s Zonta Auction raffle basket repeated the “Best of Corvallis” theme, and 12 members had a great time helping staff the Auction. Co-president Caitlin Hilton enjoyed selling 25-25-25 boxes with CV counterpart Stephanie Wang.
For the book donation to their school by Zonta’s Status of Women Committee, a small group consulted the librarians’ wish list. Z Club chose Human Trafficking, edited by Christine Fisanick. It includes essays that examine both sides of arguments pertaining to human trafficking, covering the potential influence of governments, individuals, organizations and victims on reduction of the problem.
Z Club at CHS once again organized and staffed their school’s Red Cross Blood Drive, which opened this year on March 8. In honor of International Women’s Day, Z Club staffers proudly wore temporary tattoos of the letter Z and yellow rose. The Blood Drive effort received rave reviews from the Red Cross staff for smooth operation and donor management.

Z Clubbers show off their yellow rose (temporary) tattoos for the Red Cross Blood Drive at Corvallis High School on Rose Day, March 8.

Z Clubbers dress the part to promote a positive attitude among the blood donors.
Following their school’s annual Red Cross Blood Drive in March, newly elected co-presidents Gioia and Yardena took over leadership of Z Club at CHS. They are juniors and will preside through the first semester of the next school year.
The club’s April service project, in conjunction with Z Club at CV, was to publicize the Vina Moses prom dress give away. Z Clubbers collected dresses at school, and also sorted and organized the donations. Over 200 dresses were available, and girls from as far away as Alsea High School came to select from the array.
The CHS club will continue a tradition of collecting discarded cell phones for use by CARDV clients.
