January 11th marks Amelia Earhart Day
Zonta Events range from celebrations of key events, monthly business meetings, quarterly program meetings on topics related to our mission, our Annual Auction and other fun things along the way.
Among the duties of the Attendance and Fellowship Committee is the coordination of social events to help connect the club members outside of club service or business activities. They get to be in charge of fun! Activities range from Socials to Evening Meetings, from the Monroe Munchers to the Downtown Diners.
Downtown Diners is our evening dinner group. It’s a fun way to become better acquainted with fellow Zontians outside of the normal meetings. It does not meet every month and location is different each time, allowing us to explore the many great eateries of Downtown Corvallis. This dinner requires an RSVP to make sure we have reservations for all who want to join in the fun. so that a reservation can be made.
Golden Z Club at OSU hosted Candlelight Vigil January 11, 2012 as part of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
January 11, 2012 was National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. A resolution passed by the U.S. Senate in 2007 marked this date as a day of awareness and vigilance for victims of Human Trafficking worldwide. In recent years, the issue has gained new awareness and become the focus of some new legislation in the United States, as well as three new State trafficking bills passed just in this last Oregon session.
The Golden Z held their second candlelight vigil to raise awareness of human trafficking on January 11. With a press release in the Gazette Times and LAA Committee announcements, the Golden Zs were joined by more Zontians, Soroptomists, AAUW, as well as concerned members of the Corvallis community.
Amelia Earhart Day January 11th….
Why does Zonta International commemorate the former Zonta member and renown aviator in January? She was born July 24, 1897, in Atchison, KS, and disappeared in the Pacific Ocean July 2, 1937, 22 days short of her 40th birthday and two days from a planned welcome at the completion of circumnavigating the earth at the equator on July 4,1937.
Under the leadership of Dr. Helen Pearce, ZI President from Salem, Oregon, Zonta International created the Amelia Earhart Fellowship in 1938. Dr. Pearce, a faculty member of Willamette University’s Department of English, went on to guide it as ZI Amelia Earhart Fellowship Chair for a number of years. At the outset, the Fellowship was a small loan to assist young women in pursuing studies in aeronautical engineering. It has grown to be an outright grant to women pursuing the Ph.D. in aerospace related sciences and engineering. The deadline for applying for the 2012 awards was November 15, 2011. Winners will be notified by April 2012 and announced at Convention in Torino, Italy.
Currently, winners are awarded $10,000 for the year, renewable for a second year. There are 35 awards per year. Since the beginning, there have been 1,333 Fellowships totaling US$7.5 million to women in 65 countries.
But why is January 11 designated as Amelia Earhart Day? Before the Zonta International Foundation was created to help manage Zonta assets, the date was chosen to encourage clubs to contribute to the AE Fund to boost the total amount awarded in June. Amelia began a solo flight from Wheeler Field, Hawaii, to Oakland Airport, California, on January 11, 1935. She landed her crimson Lockheed-Vega (single engine) on January 12th to a cheering crowd of 5000 becoming the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California non-stop, a distance of 2090 nautical miles.
Individuals may contribute directly to the AE Fellowship by going to “Donate Now” on the ZI website.
