Zonta Corvallis Year in Review: 2008-09
Interested in what the Zonta Club of Corvallis achieves in a year? This summary of our 2008-09 year shows how busy we’ve been, in the community and internationally.
June 2008: Whitney Olsen, Katherine Cleland, and Caroline Wilkins attended the Zonta International Convention in Rotterdam, Netherlands. At the Convention, the ZI adopted and voluntarily pre-paid $15 per person
membership dues increase and our club voluntarily paid this increase
starting 2008 – one year early – to help alleviate a ZI operational budget
shortfall. ZI also adopted a bylaw to include “or experience in” as part
of criteria for membership and another bylaw to allow any member in
good standing, including men, to transfer membership from one club
to another. The Zonta Club of Corvallis was recognized for its sustained
contributions of $20,000 per biennium. Our sister club in Uzhgorod,
Ukraine celebrated its fifth year of service and attained self-sufficiency.
July 2008: We awarded $25,000 in grants to 17 local organizations and hosted an annual picnic in the park for families involved in the PEP (Parent
Enhancement Program). We also welcomed little Chase Gardner (son
of member, Jennifer Gardner) into the world.
August 2008: Our club raised annual operational funds by collecting parking fees for five days at the Benton County Fair. Then we gathered at past president Katherine Cleland’s home for our summer social. Dianna Howell lead our club in two strategic planning sessions to determine a course for membership, publicity, service, advocacy, and fellowship. We voted to establish a committee for legislative awareness and advocacy and a primary mission of helping local women complete degrees in higher
education.
September 2008: Several of our members attended the Governor’s Seminar held in Everett, Washington, where Selma Starns, Beth Schaefers, Sandra Powell, Caroline Wilkins, and Ann Smart were recognized for 30 years or more of service in Zonta. Our Z Clubs at Corvallis and Crescent
Valley high schools kicked off successful years under the guidance of
Deb Crisman, Angie Stambuk, and Friah Rogers. Our club donated a
collection of school supplies to local students, primarily at Lincoln and
Garfield elementary schools.
October 2008: Our club celebrated its 68th anniversary! We further developed our club’s Web site, including a private “members only” section. Tara Rodden Robinson gave us a much needed pep talk to help us through
the challenges of large club membership and to recognize our greatness.
Our club volunteered to host the District 8 Governor’s Seminar in
2010.
November 2008: We raised nearly $60,000 (net) in our annual auction,
including $24,000 in dedicated scholarship funds, despite an ailing economy.
December 2008: The Program/UN/Int’l Relations committee sent a care
package to our “adopted” students at Pearson College. Our club nominated CASA and ViewPlus Technologies for awards at Celebrate Corvallis.
January 2009: Zonta Service Foundation of Corvallis announced the new
“M.K. Rusnak Scholarship” endowed by club member Pat Summerton for a student of technology, engineering, or science at LBCC or OSU.
February 2009: Dee Curwen, founder of Corvallis Multicultural Literacy
Center was the featured speaker at our program meeting. ZI moved its headquarters to Oak Brook, Illinois.
March 2009: We honored local community members who helped
women return to or stay in college on Rose Day.
April 2009: We hosted a dinner for the officers of our two Z Clubs, and Beth Reitveld moderated a panel of Rose Day honorees: Cheryl Hatch, Mark Weiss, and Bonnie Soto.
May 2009: We celebrated Mother’s Day with a special tea party for
residents of the Corvallis Manor, and we surpassed our membership goal by inducting/renewing a total of five members this year: Clara Pratt, Margaret Stahler, Diana Thompson, Heather O’Connor and Beth Crawford.
